PRENATAL ROUTINE THIAMINE PROHPYLAXIS:
Since there was evidence that thiamine could control existing PPCM and toxemia, and since thiamine is an extremely inexpensive and completely non-toxic agent, it was deemed meritorious to administer the thiamine prophylactically to all prenatals who so agreed and desired. Accordingly, oral thiamine 100 mg daily was given to over four hundred unselected prenatals for the last 30 to 90 days of their pregnancy. In that population with a toxemia rate of about 7-8% it would be expected that there would be at least 30 cases of PPCM or toxemia. However, the carefully observed incidence of PPCM, toxemia and its related illnesses in this large number of treated patients was zero.
